About Us The “Rookie @ the Wheel©” Student Driver Decal first hit the market in 1999. Two Chicago area mothers came up with the product in response to the stressful nature of parent-supervised driving hours required by the “Graduate to Safety” program. “The safety program is an excellent one,” says Marian Baratta. “Student drivers need all the practice they can get. Unfortunately, when learning to drive in an unmarked vehicle, students become easily flustered by other motorists. Since other drivers are unaware that a student is at the wheel, they often ride their bumper, beep, or speed up because of frustration. Using this alert label takes off the edge and makes the learning experience less tense and much safer.” The “Graduate to Safety” program has been adopted by over 35 states in the U.S., with numbers rising. The Chicago mothers have gone to the legislature in their home state to lobby for better safety measures. Their hope is that it will one day become mandatory in Illinois, and across the country, for student drivers to mark their vehicle when practicing with a parent. While pursuing this effort, the women have made their student driver decals available to the public. Parents, high schools, and private driving schools can now purchase this safety tool via the Web.
